How to draw an architecture diagram

An architecture diagram shows the parts of a system and how they connect: users, apps, servers, databases, queues.

An architecture diagram: Customer, Web app and CDN outside a dashed “Private network” zone holding API, Jobs, Worker, Postgres and Files, joined by requests and dashed async messages. A web app: parts as icons, a zone for the private network.

Step by step

  1. Pick Architecture from the Diagram menu. Place the parts from the panel, like User and Server, and type their names under them.

Two parts with their names: a user icon, Customer, and a server icon, API. Two parts with their names: a user icon, Customer, and a server icon, API.
  2. Pick Request and drag from one part to another; add the next parts and requests the same way. Async message draws a dashed one.

Customer sends a request to API, and API one to a database, Postgres. Customer sends a request to API, and API one to a database, Postgres.
  3. Draw a Zone around parts that share a network, region or team, and name it: what’s inside moves with it.

A dashed zone named Private network around API and Postgres. A dashed zone named Private network around API and Postgres.

Tips

Mermaid

Mermaid has no architecture diagram that this app reads; an architecture board exports as a flowchart, its zones as subgraphs. More on Mermaid import and export.
